Mahrez Could Be Set To Break Long Standing Record
Leicester City have enjoyed a marvellous season in the Championship and this has also helped one of their players to book a place in the World Cup 2014. It is highly expected that winger Riyad Mahrez will be taking part in the World Cup 2014 with the Algerian national team. The 23-year-old was an impressive player for the championship outfit last season. If he does make it into the final squad for the World Cup, then the 23-year-old will become the first Leicester City player since 2002 to take part in a World Cup finals.
Muzzy Izzet was the last player to do so. Ahead of the announcement of the final squad, Mahrez says that he is confident that the national team can overcome expectations and do well at the World Cup. The important thing for Algeria was to avoid teams in the group stages. They have done that exactly since they will be facing the likes of Belgium, Russia, and Korea in the group stages of the competition. Only Belgium are the favourites to win the group with the second place finish still open between Russia, Korea, and Algeria.
Algeria have been coming in leaps and bounds over the last few years after first starting to dominate in the African nations cup.
“It has gone very well. I was welcomed by the other players, especially the older ones. They talked with me and helped me settle in. I also had a discussion with the coach who told me to work hard. In short, everything went well. There are still several days of training. Our mission is to prepare accordingly and then it is up to the coach to make the decisions. I am at his disposal. After that, the main thing is that the final selection does well in the World Cup,” said the player.
